Who We Are
Ballymun Adult Read and Write Scheme (BARWS) was established in 1986 and is the statutory provider of literacy and basic education programmes for adults living or working in the Ballymun, Santry and Whitehall areas of Dublin city.
BARWS is funded by; City of Dublin Education and Training Board (CDETB), Department of Education and Skills and SOLAS with assistance from the European Social Fund 2014 – 2022.
The company is run by a Board of Management. Current Board members represent statutory groups, local community organisations, tutors and students.
We are actively involved in local committees and networking to ensure that information on how to address literacy difficulties are known and reflected in organisations’ practices.
Our office is based in the Ballymun Job Centre Office in Ballymun Civic Centre.
Clare Campbell attends to the day-to-day management of the Company.
What We Do
We offer literacy tuition and second chance education opportunities for adults who would like to improve literacy skills i.e. reading, writing, spelling, maths and technology skills.
The Scheme is Quality Assured under the CDETB to deliver QQI accredited courses at levels 1 – 4. This provides students with the opportunity to achieve a Major Award in General Learning.
Literacy tuition can be offered on a 1:1 basis where an adult can improve reading, writing and spelling skills working with his /her own tutor.
Small group tuition provides students with the opportunity to improve literacy levels, including technology skills, in a supportive setting.
All tuition is free of charge.
Our tutors are registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland and regularly engage with continuous professional development programmes.
Classes are held in CDETB Ballymun Adult Education Centre (near Ballymun Library) and in venues throughout the Ballymun community. We offer both daytime and evening time classes.
